Egypt - 08 - Philae Temple

Date : 24 - December - 2007
Time : 15:00

Our trip to Philae temple is an special addition to our itinerary; since we had surplus time before rail to Cairo, we helped ourselves to visit Aswan high dam and this Philae temple. The finely carved papyrus and lotus columns of the philae temple seems to be planted in the middle of Nile; yes, its an esthetic island temple. We got the entry tickets for 40 egp, but the tricky part here is the cost for the felucca to dock us in the island is another 40 egp + bahsis (tips in arabic).

Its a pleasant sight to see the philae temple floating on Nile as our felucca sails towards it. The arching sun implanting the shadows of the huge pillars, its under crowded and calm courtyards, glimpse of sparkling ripples on Nile, I can mine more reasons but to say in simple, its the romantic place that I have visited in Egypt.

For the last two days we have visited five temples on our ways, each had its own flavor and melody in its art. Mesmerizing simple and elegant Hatshetput, Mighty Karnak, Illuminated and Gorgeous temple of Luxor, Majestic abu simbel with its colossal statues of Ramses, nile side philae reinforced with aesthetic shadows ... all will leave a wonderful memory.

Egypt - 07 - Abu Simbel

Date : 24 - December - 2007
Time : 03:00

Our trip to Abu Simbel started with a surpise when our vehicle joined the convoy escorted by security vans on either side. We were rattled to know the fact that terrorists attacks in the recents pasts resulted in these security measures. We hoped for another peaceful day and moved towards Abusimbel. I was pleased to hear that it will take some 3 hours to reach, additional hours of sleep will make me in good shape atleast ;-).

After an hour of travel,we are deserted in the middle of sahara;its only sand all around our ways, nothing else other than the rising sun beyond the horizon. It was rash and bold to see through, when the whole sand of desert was glowing with the Golden rays of Sun. By the time my watch tickled 6:30, we were in the shores of Nasser lake where the Rameses Temple was relocated. The rock-cut temple was so beautiful with the artificial hill as its back ground and the sparkling lake in its front.

There two temples here in Abu simbel, one for Rameses II and other for his beloved wife Nefertari. Both these temples were dismantled and relocated some 200m from its original location in order to save these monuments from the rising water level of Nile due to Aswan Dam construction. Four mamoth statues in its sitting posture with the double crown of upper and lower egypt decorates the entrance of Rameses Temple. We were surpised to hear that all these statues were of the single pharaoh , none other than Rameses II himself. All the scenes decorated in the walls depicts only one thing; the greatness of its Pharaoh.

Finally the Abu simbel trip concluded with the dazzling temple of Nefertari and we were back to Aswan by noon. This unexpected ontime arrival, earned us a spare time of 6 hours before we depart to cairo by sleeping train. We have wisely invested this time in a small trip and proceeded towards Aswan Dam & Philae Temple.
